What they wanted

A flat drywall fireplace in a room full of windows and light — the one thing in the space with no character.

What we found

A standard gas insert in good shape, which meant everything could go into the finish instead of the mechanics.

What we did

Built out a raised hearth, wrapped the surround and hearth in ledger stone, and set a live-edge wood mantel. The fireplace went from the thing you didn't notice to the thing you sit facing.
